French antique brass iron with decorative scroll work detail and wooden handle - these "sad" irons would be filled with charcoal or hot coals and used to press your linens and clothing. This is a highly decorative example.
It has a swing arm fastening at the front to secure the lid which lifts, to allow the coals to be placed inside. Although the days of using these to complete the laundry tasks are long gone - they make decorative display items and also serve as storage containers. Dating from the late 1800's - early 1900's. Max width 2.75 /7.5cms. Condition -good antique condition - as found we have not polished -there is polish residue on the iron.
They could be polished to a high shine if the new owner preferred.
