Ca 1800's cast iron charcoal iron for use to be filled with glowing charcoal. This is a big very heavy one. Measures 8 1/2 in long and stands 7 1/2 in high. This type of iron was made back as far as the 1500's. Constructed of slabs of cast iron with holes about an inch up from the base to allow air to enter and fan the charcoal to keep it smouldering. The lid would be lifted and the iron filled with glowing charcoal. Lid was locked closed and it was ready to do the ironing. This was quite a specific process that would get some getting used to. Too hot and it scorched the clothes, smoking would soil the clothes, so on. A nice one to put on display in a kitchen or laundry room. The price is $150.00 canadian total.
