This huge, french, clothes iron dates from the 1800's and was heated by hot coals placed inside. It is rare to find these irons with their original footed stands, so this one is a real gem. The stand kept the hot cast iron away from the surface, when not in use, and has a side handle bar, for ease of transportation. Once a busy household tool it is now a decorative collectible home accent.Perfect as a bookend, door stopper, or keepsake box; as it has lots of space inside for jewellery, photos etc. In genuine antique condition, the patina is simply stunning.
There is no sign of recent rust, but it has a gnarly interior from years of being filled with hot coals; this just adds to its charm and authenticity. It is solid and sturdy, the hinges still work perfectly. To be expected with antique wood, there are expansion splits and signs of old, long-gone, worm holes on the handle, that has been worn "smooth" with time and use. It will serve as a decorative item for many, many years to come. The iron stands 25cms/ 9" tall x 25cms/ 9" long x 14cms/ 5 wide. When on the stand it is 28cms/11 tall. It weighs 3kgs/ 6.6lbs altogether. We've lots more rustic farmhouse décor if you'd like to take a look.
