English electric premier system'smoothwell' iron. Made in the early part of last century in birmingham, this''smoothwell premier system'' appliance was patented as a revolutionary invention, powered by electricity. Over the previous centuries people had become accustomed to'sad irons', which took ages to heat and tiresome to keep warm.
Not any more now the lucky 1930's housewife could have great fun pressing huge piles of laundry with the smoothwell iron. Or maybe not so easy. Stamped on the iron itself is written its. All this on a small oblong plate (see photos 5 & 7).
And for me that's the best part. Now a magnificent piece of domestic history and great to display - especially with the lovely stand. Measures 7" or 18cms long and 5" tall.
The stand is 11 or 27cms long. Note: the words vintage & antique should not mean damaged and dirty. We strive to present original period items which are of the highest standards and in the finest possible condition. This item is made of metal and iron, bakelite.
